Establishing community partnerships to benefit children and families
NexTier helps provide financial footing for Allegheny County Children’s Court to build upon

October 23, 2007 It is the one-year anniversary of the launch of the Allegheny County Children Court, which transformed the court’s handling of child custody, child protection and permanency, family violence and behavioral health matters involving children.

As the Children’s Court forges into its second year with a new identity and administration, it also has tagged a new mission onto its “to-do” list. Children’s Court wants to expand partnerships between the private and public sector to bring together a myriad people and resources and provide the best possible court experiences for at risk families in our communities. “Collaboration with community groups is critical to the work we do,” said Kim Berkeley Clark, Administrative Judge of the Allegheny County Family Division.

“Moving forward, our goal is to broaden our resource base so we can continue working toward enhanced court experiences for the most vulnerable families and children,” said Cynthia K. Stoltz, Esq., Children’s Court Administrator. Consistent with national trends, the work of the Children’s Court continues to expand. In 2006, there were 15,000 requests for court assistance regarding parenting issues alone, only one of many circumstances that bring this vulnerable population to their doors.

NexTier Bank is paving the way to help the Children’s Court establish new community partnerships by sponsoring a November 3 Gala that also kicks off Children’s Court’s recognition of National Adoption Month in November. “Our participation is underscored by our belief in building strong families, which results in healthy communities and ultimately in a sound, vibrant economy,” said Margaret Irvine Weir, NexTier President.

Among other projects, the Gala will enable Child Watch of Pittsburgh to raise critical funds for projects that soften the emotional upheaval that children experience in Children’s Court. One such project is videoconferencing, Child Watch’s collaborative effort with the Allegheny County Department of Human Services and the Children’s Court.

About the Gala
“Maskerade: An Avant Garde Gala” takes place Saturday, November 3, at 7 p.m. at the Allegheny County Family Court House with honorary chairs NFL hall-of-famer Franco Harris, NexTier president Margaret Irvine Weir, and Mr. and Mrs. Dayton and Barbara Baker. The evening will feature children’s photos displayed in the Heart Gallery, a portrait exhibit of local children who need permanent homes created by some of Allegheny County’s finest photographers; the unveiling of an interactive sculpture designed by local artist Ian Kanski that has been designated to occupy the 2nd floor Waiting Room; the 2007 Kids for Keeps Community Champion Award winners; and a compelling video produced by Bill Dodd that will share the Children’s Court story.
